Analysis by the House of Commons Library found that 1.3 million people in May faced four week waits โ€“ compared with 912,000 a year earlier. The research showed that 4.8% of practice appointments involved waits of at least four weeks โ€“ while in Gloucestershire and Sheffield the proportion rose close to 10%.

The Royal College of GPs said GPs and their teams cannot โ€œwork any harderโ€.
Through the change in our patient triage and access system we are able to filter out the high risk cases for same day review and cancer risk cases for urgent review improving patients outcomes with serious disease. Although we appreciate we cant always meet what patients would want we are able to meet what is clinical needed.

Chair Professor Kamila Hawthorne has said that we now have 900 fewer full-time fully qualified GPs compared to 2019 and โ€œThe current pressures in general practice are through no fault of hardworking GPs and their teams, but due to years of underfunding and poor workforce planning in our family doctor service. GP teams make the vast majority of NHS patient contacts, and in doing so alleviate pressure across the NHS, including in A&E. But for this to work, general practice must be properly resourced and properly staffed – and currently that is not the case.โ€
